Watercolor paint colors we will be using (regular font = pan color name in Van Gogh set below, bold font = tube colors provided in class):
It is helpful to have a warm and cool version of each primary. I prefer Winsor and Newton, Daniel Smith, and Holbein professional artist watercolors, but these can be an expensive investment for a beginner. The suggested Van Gogh Watercolor Paint Set 12+3 half pan pocketbox was the best compromise I could find on quality and cost (~$21 on Amazon) that includes all the colors above.
When it comes to paper, you should buy the best you can afford as poor paper is incredibly frustrating to work with. Arches 140 lb or 300 lb cold-pressed 100% cotton watercolor paper is my favorite, however it is expensive for beginners. This loose-leaf binder design sketchbook is an excellent bargain (~$20 on Amazon) and includes 100% cotton acid-free watercolor paper.
If you would like one full-size brush I recommend the Princeton Aqua Elite, Series 4850, Size 8 or 10 Round Synthetic Kolinsky Watercolor Brush (sale price ~ $10 on Amazon).
If you have your own supplies already, I encourage you to start with those. Wait on investing in more until after your first class, where you can assess if what you already have works.
